Home Architecture & Urban Design: Los Angeles and Southern California Research Guides at UCLA Library

design library

Goodhue was widely known in California for his influential master plan and building designs for the Panama California Exposition held in San Diego’s Balboa Park in 1915. For the Exposition Goodhue developed an ornate version of the Spanish Colonial Revival style, and the Library Board hired him in hopes he would design something in that idiom. His two final projects, the Nebraska State Capitol and our Los Angeles Central Library are regarded by architectural historians as the most innovative work of his career. The Richard J. Riordan Central Library in downtown Los Angeles is both a leading public research library and a major architectural landmark. Comprised of the original 1926 library now called the Goodhue Building and a 1993 addition named for former mayor Tom Bradley, it ranks with the Bradbury Building and Union Station as a treasure of the city’s historic downtown. The library has been designated a Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monument (#46) and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

The sculptor was Lee Lawrie who had collaborated with Goodhue on a number of major commissions. Lawrie’s sculptures for the library revolve around a theme, Light of Learning, devised by University of Nebraska philosophy professor Hartley Burr Alexander. Goodhue and Lawrie first worked with Alexander on the Nebraska state capitol, and for both buildings, Alexander developed subject matter for the sculpture and chose or authored the inscriptions used on both exterior and interior. The result is a distinctive combination of a building strikingly modern in style, yet traditional in the way it uses art to symbolize and celebrate its cultural function.

Established in 1852, the Boston Public Library is home to a Charles Follen McKim-designed building, just like the aforementioned Morgan Library & Museum. The research collection of the Boston Public Library boasts more than 1.7 million rare books and manuscripts, including Shakespeare’s First Folio and various quartos of his writing. The Austrian National Library is extravagant, and understandably so—various emperors (and even an archduke) played a role in the origins of this remarkable building. In this bedroom designed by Tamsin Johnson, the elaborate, moody bookshelf contrasts with the modern bedskirt and pale blush pink and white color scheme.

The rest of Lawrie’s sculptures preserved from the East Wing have been mounted in the Taper Auditorium lobby. The Tom Bradley Wing contains a number of art projects commissioned as part of the city’s percent for art program administered by the Department of Cultural Affairs. Now empty of its original working function (the catalog has been computerized and circulation relocated to the ground floor), this room can be appreciated as the dramatically beautiful heart of Goodhue’s design. Rene came to the Library in 2004 with years of experience as Manager of a major retail store. Rene maintains all Library records related to design sales and rentals, and tirelessly keeps our complex office functioning smoothly. Kate manages the Design Library’s archive in Fitzrovia, London, serving our clients in the UK, Europe and Australia.

As it would affect the room composition and thought process an enthusiast considers when curating a space. An esteemed international panel of experts is evaluating the registered projects, with winners announced during the awards ceremony in October, 2024. All kinds of designs are welcomed, ranging from product to visual and digital/multimedia, to spatial/system and service/experiential/social. In its previous edition in 2023, the Seoul Design Award saw significant global engagement, with 2,384 individuals from 60 nations participating in the voting process for the Citizens’ Award. This emblematic participation underscores the Award’s commitment to fostering communication, peoples’ involvement, and the sharing of diverse design concepts with the public.

As a long-time Soho resident and a frequent visitor to the cultural haunts of that city, John brings a keen eye for trends and a creative approach to our mens, street, casual wear & theatrical clients in particular. The 2024 edition of the Award continues to celebrate outstanding design solutions that tackle contemporary challenges. Another winner was the Jerrycan Bag from Korea, a bag that helps African children safely transport jerry cans (water containers), produced by Uganda women. Each of these won the second prize for the Best of Best award, showcasing exemplary creativity, participation, and impact. Perry devised a subject-oriented organizational plan for the building and Goodhue and Lawrie collaborated on the development of its architectural and sculptural forms. Through Debris, designers Shoma Furui and Kem Kobayashi aim to communicate the issue of environmental disruption subtly, using party accessories made from marine plastic collected from Makuhari Beach as material. The visually striking appearance resembles a cross-section of buried plastic waste, featuring pop patterns and textures created by the resin.

Not sure if those still exist, but I’m fairly sure that the dramatic reference desk in the lower row is still around. Julius Shulman (1910–2009) was a renowned architectural photographer who popularized mid-century modern architecture with his elegant photographs. Some of his prodigious output is accessible online through the Getty Research Institute, where I found these photos of the Asuza Public Library (and the one that follows). When I see a building, piece of furniture, type, or graphic design that is spare and functional, full of long lines and quadrilaterals, made of simple materials, and connected to its environment, it gives me a distinctly calm feeling. When I see a mid-century modern building, the world slows down, it makes sense. "Nothing transports like a deep red room," says designer Mary McDonald of the sumptuous library in a Beverly Hills home.

The other project, entitled Illuminations by Ann Preston, consists of four columnar light fixtures installed on the escalator landings at each level along the atrium’s inner wall. Standing thirteen feet high and constructed of radiating vanes of brushed aluminum, they contain small lights embedded in the base and top of each sculpted form. In addition to the book excitement, we have also recently landed magnificent new collections. As well as hosting clients visiting our London archive, John frequently travels all over Europe to visit clients in their offices.

It houses everything from dedicated 3D printing and robotics labs to a cafe, all organized around a central core. Flexible floorplates allow for a variety of configurations, from single-height classrooms to double-height studios. A fire-resistant spiral staircase provides a unique pathway and encourages chance encounters, further sparking creativity. One of three on-campus libraries, UCSD's flagship learning structure is the Theodor Geisel library.

We play lots of board games together and have been able to explore various restaurants in the city as well. I am still learning about Philly and am always open to recommendations for places to visit and see. I am an avid Dungeons & Dragons player, having worked as a professional Game Master for two years. When I am not playing in person, you can find me playing Baldur’s Gate 3 online. As noted above, I am an avid reader and I love to get out and travel as much as I can. (It could be a TV show, podcast, book series, music artist, etc.) Something I am binging right now on TV is Abbot Elementary.
